Ownership Opportunities
Owning a standardbred racehorse can be the most exciting investment you'll ever make. You might buy a horse because you want to become intimately involved in the sport, expect a return on your investment, or take advantage of some tax breaks. Owning a horse in the Mogan Stable can be all those things-plus its just plain fun! For most prospective owners, two questions arise: "How do I get started?" and " how much will it cost?". Hopefully this website will answer those two questions.
All owners must be licensed by the United States Trotting Association (USTA) and the State of Florida. When racing in Canada, all owners must be licensed by the Ontario Racing Commission. Upon request, a stable staff member will mail you all the necessary forms and be glad to walk you through the licensing process. As a perspective new owner, you need to decide the amount of money you are willing to invest, the type of horse you want to own and do you want to own the horse outright or form a partnership.
At the Mogan Stable we offer two types of ownership:
Sole Ownership: As the name implies, it is one individual who is responsible for all the expenses but eligible to reap all the rewards. With this stables billing system, you know roughly what the horse will cost per month.
Partnership: As in any other business, partnerships may be formed between principles, who may own the asset (horse) in varying proportions. All fractional owners must be licensed and the minimum percentage allowed by this stable is ten percent (10%). Experience has shown that too many owners on one horse is problematic. For example a 10% fractional horse owner would be liable between $175.00 to $235.00 dollars per month in expenses but conversely would be entitled to 10% of the horse monthly purse earnings.
What type of racehorse? and how do I find one?
There are basically 3 types of racehorses to purchase, yearlings, claimers or condition horses with each catagory being divided by sex (filly, colt) and gait (trot or pace) for a total of 9 possibilities.
1. Yearling: Buying yearlings offers the best chance of hitting the "home run" but is also the most speculative and risky. The Mogan Stable is a racing stable and as a result, we do not train yearlings.
2. Claiming: Claimers are the horses who compete in races where they are for sale. Horses are grouped by their sale price such as a $20,000 claimer. Anyone who wants to buy/claim the horse must fill out the claiming form and submit it to the track judges along with a certified check one hour prior to the race being conducted. When the race is over, you own the horse. Claiming is the simplest way to get started in the business and usually the fastest way as the horse can compete the following week racing in your name as owner. As such, we are always monitoring claiming races throughout the United States and Canada looking for buying opportunities.
3. Condition: Condition horses race in events with assigned conditions and cannot be claimed. At Pompano and Mohawk the conditions are based upon money won the last 5or 6 starts or number of lifetime wins. As the horse improves winning more money, he must move up in class, racing for more money at each increase in class. The highest level of overnight condition races are Open, Invitational or "Winners Over". Some horses peak when climbing the class ladder and eventually enter the claiming ranks. The stable has established a network of contacts throughout the United States, Canada, Austrailia and New Zealand, giving us the ability to purchase quality race horses.
The stable has established a special account at Pompano Park and Mohawk where investors can deposit their money until a qualitiy claim or private purchase becomes available. When a perspective purchase has been identified, the investor will be contacted and receive all the pertinent information. No money will be utilized unless permission has been recieved to proceed by the investor.
Existing horse owners are always welcomed and can be assured their horse will be given first class care.
If your interested in becoming a part of The "Mogan" Stable, please send me an email or contact me via phone. I will be glad to discuss training rates and determine the level of involvement that suits your needs.
" nothing beats the thrill of a win shared with family and friends".
