A native of Philadelphia, Pa., Richard trained standardbred horses for 6 years prior to attending and graduating from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. For the past 15 years he has practiced on the grounds at Pompano Park. Dr. Axelrod completed the CHI Institute Equine Acupunture Course in 2000 and is the local expert in this area of treatment. He has established a great working relationship with the stable and with his training backround he is invaluable at keeping the stable healthy and fit. Richard has his own helmet in the stable and can be often be seen jogging/training a Mogan horse in an attempt to locate a lameness issue.

At Mohawk, the stable hires the services of three on track vets.

Grooms:

It is the stable policy to pay top groom wages and in return expect quality work. No groom is assigned more than 4 horses, with average "groom to horse ratio" being 3 to 1.

Phil Cable a native of Illinois started shoeing horses at the ripe old age of 11. Through the past 50 years he has shoed horses for such notable trainers as Stanley Dancer, Harry Pownall, Joe O'Brian, Frank Todd Sr., William Haughton, Howard Beissinger etc. to name a few.

Phil is the real deal and tops in his trade. He is in high demand at Pompano Park but limited to the number of horses he can comfortably shoe. This stable is privileged to be able to call him our stable blacksmith.

At Mohawk, the stable employs two top on track Blacksmiths.
